If you walked into Reef and Eve’s bathroom a month ago, you’d swear you had stepped into a time machine set for the early ’90s. The space was fragmented, featuring a toilet awkwardly hidden in its own tiny room, creating a disjointed and cramped feeling that ran counter to modern design principles focused on open spaces and flow.
The small 4×4 square builder style tiles covering the floor and portions of the wall only accentuated this outdated atmosphere. These tiles were used by the builders back in the day because of their low cost and efficiency. Quite popular at the time and used in almost every single bathroom throughout the NOVA area; they were a declaration of a bygone era, crying out for an update.
Adding to the room’s old-fashioned vibe was the wall paint—a plain, creamy hue that may have been the height of fashion decades ago, but now contributed to the bathroom’s outdated look. The dated fixtures seemed as if they were holding on for dear life, tarnished from years of use and woefully out of sync with the home’s otherwise contemporary and elegant aesthetic.

In its new form, the bathroom seamlessly blends modern aesthetic with functional design. The combination of sophisticated tiles, calming wall hues, and a more open floor plan has not only created a brighter, more inviting space but also a modern sanctuary. The room now feels not just updated but truly transformative, setting a new standard for what a contemporary bathroom can be.
Statement Pieces: The Vanity and More
In a move that showcased both sustainability and keen design sensibility, the vanity unit and lighting fixtures were actually not original but had been updated sometime before the extensive bathroom remodel. These previously updated elements—a pair of elegant white cabinets and a complementary L-shaped quartz countertop—were skillfully retained and reinstalled, lending both continuity and a sense of familiarity to the otherwise brand-new bathroom.
The same goes for the 4-bulb light fixtures; these were also newer additions that had proven their worth in terms of both functionality and style. Their reintegration into the revamped bathroom space was a nod to the concept that some elements, even if not original, can continue to serve well when surrounded by a completely new aesthetic.
As a result, the vanity area emerged as an exceptional blend of the selectively preserved and the entirely new. This strategic design choice not only elevated the modern look of the space but also demonstrated how even recent upgrades can seamlessly mesh with a fresh renovation to create a unified, luxurious sanctuary.
Function Meets Elegance: The Shower and Tub
The shower was an epitome of both style and function, thanks to the L-shaped custom frameless glass enclosure. This luxurious yet minimalist element made the space look larger and more open, while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic.
Multiple shower heads took the experience to the next level. A ceiling-mounted unit offered a rainfall effect, while a wall-mounted version featured a detachable extension, allowing for a versatile, spa-like showering experience.
The ingenuity didn’t stop there. Built-in custom shelf provided convenient storage for toiletries, while a strategically positioned seat offered a comfortable spot to relax, essentially turning the shower into a personal oasis. Each element, from the glass enclosure to the dual shower heads, converged to create a shower space that was both practical and plush.
The soaker tub across from the shower deserves an honorable mention. This wasn’t merely a replacement; it was an upgrade. The tub fixtures were relocated to better suit the new layout and updated with modern contemporary style fixtures. Surrounded by the same 12 x 24-inch porcelain tiles that graced the rest of the bathroom, the tub area was transformed into a relaxation zone of its own, perfectly complementing the adjacent high-end shower.
Light it Up!
The old, bulky lighting fixtures were swapped out for modern recessed lights, significantly elevating the brightness and overall ambience of the room. These new lights offered a higher light output, ensuring that the bathroom remained well-lit even during the evenings. While the existing skylights were not new additions, their natural illumination harmoniously blended with the enhanced artificial lighting, making the entire space feel airy during the daytime. Together, the new lighting setup and the original skylights created a balanced, luminous atmosphere perfect for any time of the day.
