Here was the challenge: Take a small bathroom in a 1941 colonial — a bathroom that had never been renovated since the house was built in the days before Pearl Harbor — and turn it into a modern, marble-tiled master bath, with a shower, tub and double sink vanity.

The first thing we needed was more space. We got it by taking over two adjacent closets, one in the master bedroom and one in an adjoining bedroom. (We replaced that closet by building another in the room.)

We searched for quality materials, trying to replicate the look of a truly luxurious bathroom from a four-star hotel. We found cappuccino marble for the walls, designed a large glass-enclosed shower (in the space of one of those closets), and found a graceful double-sink vanity at Restoration Hardware. The design work alone took upwards of two weeks, working with the homeowners.
Then came the demolition, a messy job because we destroyed the walls — two inches of solid concreted poured over wire mesh — back to the studs. The ceiling was removed so we could install a fan and vent it to the roof. (There was 6,000 to 7,000 pounds of debris.) We moved redid all the plumbing. We rewired, eliminating old aluminum wiring. We took out an old radiator, and ordered a modern, European style one that could heat the enlarged space.
Soon the new bathroom began to take shape — a shower in the corner, a new tub, all new faucets and hardware. It took about a month to complete. The owners were delighted. They stay in a lot of hotels for work, and say that the bathrooms are rarely as nice as the one we have built back at home. Take a look at pictures, and see what we created
